Théâtre de l'Opéra de Tunis opens El Jem Festival with Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas"
The 39th Festival International de Musique Symphonique d'El Jem opens on Saturday 11 July with a full staging of Purcell's baroque opera *Dido and Aeneas* in the Roman amphitheatre, performed by the Théâtre de l'Opéra de Tunis under conductor Stéphane Viguier.
The Théâtre de l'Opéra de Tunis opens the 39th Festival International de Musique Symphonique d'El Jem on Saturday 11 July at 22:00 with a full staging of Henry Purcell's Dido and Aeneas in the Roman amphitheatre of El Jem.
Purcell's late-17th-century work is regarded as one of the earliest fully sung operas in British history. The production is directed and choreographed by Omar Rajeh, and features the Ballet de l'Opéra de Tunis, the voices of the Opéra de Tunis, and the Tunisian orchestra conducted by maestro Stéphane Viguier. The performance runs approximately two hours.
The venue is the UNESCO-listed Roman amphitheatre, Amphitheatre El Jem, Route Mahdia, El Jem. The festival continues with nine further concerts through to 15 August, including the Orchestre du Bal de l'Opéra de Vienne, the Camerata de Barcelone, Orchestre l'Orphéon (France), and violinist Yuri Revich, who closes the festival on 15 August.
