Tunisia seeks Maltese support for international organisation candidacies

Tunisia is seeking Maltese support for Tunisian candidacies to posts in international organisations, following talks between officials from the two countries.

Tunisia’s ambassador to Malta, Zouheir Bouras, met Neville Aquilina, director general for general affairs and international cooperation at Malta’s Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs.

According to a Tunisian foreign ministry statement cited by local media, the meeting focused on support for Tunisian candidates seeking positions of responsibility within international organisations.

The statement did not name the organisations concerned, the posts being sought or the Tunisian candidates involved.

The two officials also underlined the importance of strengthening multilateral cooperation, citing the level of relations between Tunis and Valletta.

Tunisia and Malta have close Mediterranean links and overlapping interests in migration, maritime cooperation, transport, tourism, trade and regional stability.

The meeting follows broader efforts to build the bilateral relationship. Tunisia and Malta have been preparing a new session of their joint commission, with discussions expected to cover transport, maritime fishing and economic exchanges.

Trade has also been a point of focus. Tunisian officials have previously highlighted a trade balance favourable to Tunisia, helped by exports including food products, mechanical and electronic goods, and growing interest in Tunisian olive oil on the Maltese market.

The Tunisian community in Malta remains small but visible, with students, professionals and workers forming part of the human link between the two countries.
